76tourin take on the Gibb River Road on their Big Lap

8 nights on the Gibb and what an adventure that was. Plenty of Hikes, driving, water holes, good campgrounds and corrugated roads.

We set off with a rough plan for the Gibb but had nothing set in stone. This gave us plenty of opportunity to embrace what came and talk to fellow travelers on must sees throughout the Gibb.

The first two nights we spent at El Questro station we set our alarms at 5:30 each day and set off to see the gorges. This allowed us to miss the rush period and the heat.

El Questro gorge was our first hike, 6km return. One of the hardest but the whole time we had a smile on our faces laughing. The trips and slips, falling into the water with shoes on and all the rocks we had to climb made it such an adventure. In our opinion this was the best hike.

After that we set off to do Emma gorge (3.5km return) on the same day. The scenery along the trail was amazing and by far the prettiest gorge we visited.

The next day we set off to Amalia gorge (3.4km) and Zebedee springs.

We then headed for the Pentecost Crossing where we camped there for a night to get everything sorted before we set off and started the heavily corrugated road.

We set off the next morning and the road was something else a lot of sharp rocks, corrugations, and a lot of people with flat tires. We ended up at the Gibb River Camp. This camp was the perfect place to be able to relax after the road conditions we just encountered. Ended up staying there for two nights, our dog Otis loved the water, and it was the perfect place to keep cool.

Next camp was Haan River, we managed to get a private spot with a swing and some water for Otis to swim in.

Mount Barnet was next, we stayed here for one night to be able to do the Manning Gorge hike (4km return).

We set off early in the morning at 6am crossed the manning creek and off we went. The gorge was stunning, and we spent all morning there jumping off rocks and swimming. After that we went to Gavin’s Gorge and spent most of the afternoon there. Was a great place to be able to relax and cool off.

Our last night on the Gibb was spent at Lennard River Rest spot. This was just before the bitumen road, we were so excited.

Before we knew it we were off the Gibb River Road and definitely happy to get to Broome.

We really did enjoy the hikes, scenery and all the special places we took our Great Aussie Caravan. It didn’t miss a beat!
